BSX Launch Kickstarter Campaign For LVL Band Wearable Hydration Sensor
A new device has turned up on Kickstarter called LVL that’s hailed as the first wearable hydration monitor. The designers say that wearable allows user to track the complete picture of their health and tracks activity, mood, sleep, and heart rate.
The LVL Band tracks hydration, heart rate, steps, sleep quality, and calories burned. It measures hydration and heart rate by using NIRS (Near Infrared Light), similar to red light sensors that the company uses within their BSX Insight device. However, there are elements of the existing Insight device in band, it just contains additional wavelengths to detect hydration aspects. Meanwhile, the other metrics (i.e. steps) are largely just captured using common accelerometers. Note that the LVL Band will not capture Insight metrics such as muscle oxygen levels. But the company says they are capable of measuring respiratory rate, muscle oxygen, blood oxygen, and lactate threshold down the road with this Band, should they go in that direction and expand the capabilities of the device.
The activity monitoring includes step tracking, floors climbed, distance, and other data. This wearable will tell you how much fluid you need to take in based on the current levels and sweat rates. As you workout LVL will tell you how much to drink to maintain performance at your current sweat rate. This new wearable will also tell you how much to drink before bed to sleep better.
The screen of the wearable is a full color OLED and it has side buttons for additional input. The band can be had along with a brown leather strap, black leather strap, or with a silicone strap.
The project is on Kickstarter seeking $50,000 and as raised $1,117,000 so far. A pledge of $130 or more will get you a LVL with shipping in July 2017.
