Formias biofuel handling system was started in Fortums new heat plant in Hanko Formia Vesme in Kauhajoki, the affiliate of Formia Technology Group Oy, has supplied a comprehensive solid fuel handling system to a new bioheat plant of Fortum Power and Heat Oy in Hanko. The heat generation output of the plant is 18 MW and it generates process steam to Genencor factory and district heating to Hanko city. Domestic renewable biofuels, mainly wood chips are used as a fuel in the plant. These replace the earlier used heavy fuel oil. The plant has started its productive operation in the beginning of 2010. Formia's delivery includes the receiving house and the complete conveyor system up to the boiler silo. The system pays special attention to flexible fuel feeding to guarantee an optimal fuel blend for enhanced thermal efficiency in burning. In addition to woody biomass, the system has readiness for using peat. Similar deliveries have also earlier been made to Fortum, Valio production plant in Seinäjoki and to Vammala plywood factory. The largest systems have been supplied even to 300 MW size plants. "Formia has a long-term experience on biomass handling and a special attention is paid to system reliability and to ensuring that the entire energy generating process is integrated as a functional complex", states Kari Anttila, the Business Unit Director of Formia Vesme. " In line with the company strategy, Formia focuses more than ever on ever more extensive complete deliveries of environmental and energy solutions. Due to the latest investments in Bubbling Fluidized Bed (BFB) technology, the company can expand their operations to deliver comprehensive solutions to bioheat plants in the 4-40 MW range. This is a natural continuum for Formia's current activities", continues Anttila.
