Several million euro order won by Formia and Siemens for Itella postal sorting systems Formia Vesme Oy in Kauhajoki, the affiliate of Formia Technology Group Oy, and Siemens Osakeyhtiö signed a supply contract worth several million euros for postal sorting system units to be delivered to Itella Oyj. The contract includes also supplemental options. The sorting chutes delivered by Formia are a part of larger entity of postal sorting systems that Siemens will deliver to Itella. These deliveries are destined for Itella's sorting centers in Oulu, Helsinki, Kuopio and Tampere, Finland. The first equipment are due to become operational with speed, already during springtime 2009 and the deliveries will continue till year 2010. Formia's delivery contract includes design, manufacture and testing of both automatic and manual sorting chutes, with direct delivery to the sorting centers. These units belong to a larger entity of postal sorting machines and letter conveyor systems, worth tens of millions euros, that Siemens together with its partners delivers to Itella. These deliveries, on the other hand, are a part of Itella's major postal sorting systems investment worth about 160 million euros. These investments are made in order to make the most of postal sorting operations and to improve quality and work ergonomics with automation. Production of the sorting chutes starts immediately at Formia's factories in Kauhajoki and Seinäjoki. Formia Lakeus in Seinäjoki produces the sheet metal parts of the delivery and Formia Vesme in Kauhajoki is responsible for the welded structures, design and project management, testing and delivery. Employing impact of the delivery is thirteen man years, mainly during the three first quarters of 2009. Formia Vesme has already earlier successfully cooperated with the storage logistics unit of Siemens AG and now is starting the first project with Siemens Osakeyhtiö. "All major international suppliers were invited to the biphasic bidding contest. In the last phase, Formia was competing for example with a German module supplier of the now implemented part of the delivery. The delivery time, locality and flexibility of Formia's concept turned out to be superior in addition to competitive price and Itella's long-term partnership with Formia Lakeus", says Kari Anttila, the Business Unit Director of Formia Vesme. "Formia Lakeus, specializing in contract manufacturing related to sheet metal handling, has a decades-long history of cooperation with Itella. The partnership has been intense and lately for example working ergonomics has been further developed", states Mika Vinni, the Business Unit Director of Formia Lakeus. "Winning this order bears testimony to Formia's competitiveness also during the prevailing weakened demand situation and in tough international competition. This order significantly lengthens order books of Formia's both business units, greatly brightening the company's prospects for 2009", continues Anttila.
